White Center Promise Goes Forward Without DOE Grant
The awardees have been announced and unfortunately White Center Promise did not receive a DOE Promise Neighborhood Implementation grant this year. Rest assured, this news does not sway us from our mission. We are starting implementation in the early learning, out-of-school-time, and family navigators areas in late January, and we are in the process of building our database. We will continue to work with our partners on programmatic and systemic coordination and innovation, and we will continue on with resource and fund development. White Center Promise is part of the winning DOE Race to the Top – District grant that was coordinated by The Road Map Project on behalf of 7 school districts in Seattle and south King County. We had a great turnout for the White Center Promise Celebration this year. Over 1,000 people came out on the sunny Friday of Labor Day weekend to eat, dance, get free backpacks and talk with us about WCP. Also in attendance and providing key remarks were Highline School District Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield and King County Executive Dow Constantine. There were huge performances from the well-known EriAm Sisters, Au-Lac Vovinam Lion Dance Team and Seattle Kokon Taiko Drummers. We are looking forward to coming together with the White Center community for the White Center Promise Summer Celebration 2012. It’s on Friday, August 31st from 4-6:30pm at Greenbridge Plaza. Last year we had over 400 participants and we anticipate even more this year. White Center CDA completed and submitted the federal Promise Neighborhood grant for White Center Promise. The WCCDA requested $20 million over 5 years to support the infrastructure and programs needed to implement the continuum of solutions developed over the last 18 months. A huge thanks goes out to all of the individuals and organizations who came together to support this huge undertaking.
