White Center Promise Goes Forward Without DOE Grant

The awardees have been announced and unfortunately White Center Promise did not receive a DOE Promise Neighborhood Implementation grant this year.

Rest assured, this news does not sway us from our mission. We are starting implementation in the early learning, out-of-school-time, and family navigators areas in late January, and we are in the process of building our database. We will continue to work with our partners on programmatic and systemic coordination and innovation, and we will continue on with resource and fund development. We made a promise to White Center and we will keep keep going forward no matter what. Once again, we appreciate your continued support and commitment to this work.

WCP is Part of the Winning Puget Sound Region RTT-D Grant!

White Center Promise is part of the winning DOE Race to the Top – District grant that was coordinated by The Road Map Project on behalf of 7 school districts in Seattle and south King County. The application was one of only two nationally to be awarded the full $40 million, and our application was the fourth highest scoring out of 372 nationally. Among an array of important systemic work within each district, White Center is one of the two “deep dive” locations with a focus on alignment of effective direct service work. This work is centered on the early learning, out-of-school time and Family Navigator supports at White Center Heights Elementary and Mount View Elementary as outlined in the WCP Continuum of Solutions. We are very excited to join with our local and regional partners in this exciting opportunity!

WCP Summer Celebration a Big Hit

We had a great turnout for the White Center Promise Celebration this year. Over 1,000 people came out on the sunny Friday of Labor Day weekend to eat, dance, get free backpacks and talk with us about WCP.

Also in attendance and providing key remarks were Highline School District Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield and King County Executive Dow Constantine.

There were huge performances from the well-known EriAm Sisters, Au-Lac Vovinam Lion Dance Team and Seattle Kokon Taiko Drummers.

In addition, fifteen community organization hosted tables as vendors to get information out about educational opportunities, health related information, jobs and neighborhood improvement. Twenty volunteers helping during the day of the event from start to finish. These volunteers helped with set-up, serving food, registration, check-in, book bag giveaways, food prep, directing guest and tear down at the end of the event.

There were also generous donations of 200 book bags from United Health Care, 50 book bags and 100 pairs of shoes from White Center Heights Elementary School, and gift cards from both Target and QFC.

Thank you to everyone who helped this event be so successful!

The West Seattle Herald is getting the word out about White Center Promise. It’s a well-timed article that should bring even more people to the WCP Summer Celebration tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 31st, 4-6:30, Greenbridge Plaza). We already have over 500 people signed up so it should be a great event!

We are looking forward to coming together with the White Center community for the White Center Promise Summer Celebration 2012. It’s on Friday, August 31st from 4-6:30pm at Greenbridge Plaza. Last year we had over 400 participants and we anticipate even more this year. There will be excellent local food, giveaways for kids and adults, great entertainment, and breakout sessions about White Center Promise with language interpretation in Somali, Spanish,Vietnamese, Arabic and Khmer.

Federal Promise Neighborhood Implementation Grant Submitted

White Center CDA completed and submitted the federal Promise Neighborhood grant for White Center Promise. The WCCDA requested $20 million over 5 years to support the infrastructure and programs needed to implement the continuum of solutions developed over the last 18 months. A huge thanks goes out to all of the individuals and organizations who came together to support this huge undertaking.

While the Department of Education has until the end of December to announce the awardees, we are committed to beginning implementation of White Center Promise in January 2013 either way. We have a smaller rollout plan that we will be working on with partners this fall to ensure the work begins in January.

Resident Advisory Committee Seeking Applicants

We are seeking White Center residents for our new White Center Promise Resident Advisory Committee to provide the WCP Core Leadership Team and staff with information and recommendations to ensure that WCP is constantly listening to and accountable to White Center’s children and families. The Resident Advisory Committee will be made up of 15 White Center residents selected for a one-year term through an application process. Thirty percent of the committee should be White Center parents and another 30% should be White Center youth. The application deadline is Wednesday, June 20, 2012. 2012 WCP Summer Celebration Save the Date

This year’s WCP Annual Summer Celebration is scheduled for Friday, August 31st, from 4-7pm. Hold the date for great entertainment, tons of food, and lots of great information about how we can all work to support our children’s success. Last year over 400 people took part and there were great activities and giveaways for kids and families alike. We’ll post more info on this year’s event as soon as it’s available, but hold August 31st in your calendar!

2012 Promise Neighborhoods Federal Grant Application Released

The 2012 Promise Neighborhoods grant has been released! This year WCP will be applying for the implementation grant which is $4-6 million dollars for 3-5 years. Only 5-7 implementation grants will be awarded, but we hope to be among them. Last year we came very close to securing a planning grant with a score of 98.33 — we were in the top 10% of over 300 applicants.
